WWE Star Keen to Take Undefeated Boxer Taylor Under her Wing in Pro Wrestling

Irish WWE star Becky Lynch has certainly made an impact since she arrived in the WWE in 2013. However, things really picked up in pace when she gained prominence by becoming the inaugural SmackDown Women’s Champion in September of last year.

She began wrestling in 2002 and worked in and around Europe, earning her stripes before heading to Japan and North America, where she eventually hit the big time. It came through years of diligent training on the smaller stages, building her skills and profile.

The Dubliner believes fellow Irish athlete Katie Taylor could have a promising future inside the professional wrestling world without the need for years in the small halls, and says she would love to help her if the undefeated boxer ever did fancy a change from the fighting scene.

Branding Taylor “amazing”, the 30-year-old said: “If getting involved in wrestling was something she was keen to do, then I would happily take her under my wing.”

With fellow Irish combatant Conor McGregor rumoured to be a feature in the WWE in the future, there’s a desire at the moment for crossover stars, and especially the “Fighting Irish”.

Taylor is extremely popular as an Olympic and world champion, albeit not quite on the scale of McGregor, and she could no doubt bring a big fan base with her.

As it stands, the “Bray Bomber” is on a roll at 7-0 in her professional career, having just taken her first world title on October 28. She’s touted for a return on December 15 for her first defence before the year is out, and the latest boxing odds will see her as a frontrunner to go 8-0.

Her pro career has seen an exceptionally busy start, with the seven wins coming in the space of 11 months, upholding the hectic schedule of her amateur career into the paid ranks. Fight by fight, she is proving herself to be a potential superstar, but the female game just isn’t the same road to riches as the more prestigious male boxing arena.
With potential crossover bouts being talked about by promoter Eddie Hearn, different avenues are not off the cards for Taylor. Looking to exploit any opportunity to extract revenue from the fleeting career in combat, this could mean she’s more likely to take Lynch up on her offer at some point in the future.

It seems likely that she will focus all of her efforts on fighting in the immediate future, but like Ronda Rousey, she could cameo in the WWE to make herself known to the fanbase, before making any all-out assault when she decides to hang up the gloves.

Taylor has already helped to raise the level of interest for women’s sport in Ireland and further afield. It seems like her opportunities will be endless and we’ll be keeping our eyes on her next move.
