In exactly two months it will be Christmas, no hiding from it. The kids might be already writing their presents list but Thunderbird Releasing wants to bring some warmth with The Man Who Invented Christmas.
The film stars Dan Stevens as the literary genius, Charles Dickens, and tells the story behind the timeless Christmas classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’. Don’t be a ‘ba humbug’ and kick off your festive spirit and watch the official UK Trailer.
When it comes to Christmas time we sometimes forget those more traditional sources to enjoy the period, forgetting Dickens help shape our entertainment. Mixing the reality with the characters from the iconic book, but this is a ‘origins’ story. So nice to see who inspired Tiny Tim and of course Ebenezer Scrooge.
In 1843, Dickens was a literary rock star, but struggling financially after the slow sales of his previous novel, Martin Chuzzlewit. Seized with the vision of a story that would fire the hearts of humanity, Dickens pitched his publishers, ‘A Christmas Carol’, but they passed. Desperate, Dickens declared he would publish it himself. Slipping into the world of his novel, he spent the next six weeks laughing and arguing with his characters, acting out scenes like a madman on the streets of London for hours on end.
His family and friends worried he was going insane, but Dickens prevailed and finished just before Christmas, creating a masterpiece which gave birth to the Christmas we know and love today.
The Man Who Invented Christmas will be released in UK and Irish cinemas nationwide from Friday 1st December. Starring Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) as Ebenezer Scrooge, Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) as John Dickens, Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets), and Simon Callow (Victoria and Abdul, Four Weddings and a Funeral).
