Pain can cripple anyone young or old, even Superheroes like Logan has that pain (arthritis), but the human spirit does make us do amazing things to control pain. In Maudie, Sally Hawkins plays the renowned Canadian artist crippled by arthritis in need to change her life. Today Sony Pictures Classics UK has sent us the UK trailer ahead of the movie’s release next month, check it out…

Summer season called ‘Blockbuster Season’ for a reason, but any true cinephile knows it’s not all about spandex heroes, pirates or gigantic fighting robots. Look between the lines you will find a number of a wonderful smaller independent movie like Maudie. A movie that focuses not on the special effects, big names signed to the cast but the story and outstanding performances by talented individuals like Sally Hawkins. This movie proves she is a talent consistently delivered, could this one get her the accolades she deserves? From the reviews from Toronto, Berlin Film Festivals she might just.

Based on a true story, MAUDIE, set in mid-century Nova Scotia, is directed by Aisling Walsh (TV’s Fingersmith) and stars Oscar nominees, Sally Hawkins (Paddington, Happy-Go-Lucky) and Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Before Midnight).

The film charts the unlikely romance between Maud Lewis (Hawkins), an increasingly popular folk artist, and the curmudgeonly reclusive fish peddler, Everett (Hawke).

Bright-eyed and intelligent, though crippled by arthritis, Maud yearns to be independent and to live away from her cold and oppressive family. She finds an escape when she answers Everett’s ad for a housekeeper.

To Everett’s consternation, Maud turns out to be terrible at housework, preoccupied as she is with painting every corner of his tiny shack with flowers, birds and butterflies. As her art blossoms into a burgeoning career, so too it brings Maud and Everett closer together in ways they never imagined.

Maudie will be released in the UK and Irish cinemas from 4th August with Gabrielle Rose, Kari Matchett and Billy MacLellan making up the rest of the cast.
