This week Rachel Weisz true story courtroom drama Denial will arrive in UK cinemas, for her following movie she becomes a femme fatale. Thanks to Fox Searchlight it’s all obsession, paranoia and wicked games as we watch the first UK trailer for My Cousin Rachel.
Directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill) a movie based on a Daphne du Maurier novel, a dark, complex Gothic tale of mystery and romance. A young man (Sam Claflin) who comes under the spell of his guardian’s wife(Weisz). Revenge or seduction?
My Cousin Rachel is no stranger to the screen (big and small), with Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland already bring a version in 1952. Back in 1980’s this time for Television the celebrated novel found itself a drama for the BBC. Now 30 plus years on we will get an updated version that looks like it won’t disappoint on the alluring charm.
The trailer isn’t a promo that’s teasing us more with mood and the intense tone rather than the actual movies plot. It’s good to see Rachel Weisz play a more enigmatic character rather than one that’s a little secondary. We’re certainly seen a more mature, captivating even mysterious. Daphne Du Maurier is no stranger to dark, sweeping, complex novels as Alfred Hitchcock has a lot to thank her for. She wrote Jamaica Inn, Rebecca and the chilling The Birds all great movies from the British auteur.
