Star Trek needs no introduction and as we eagerly wait for the first TV series in over a decade Star Trek: Discovery, it seems they have found their lead.

Sonequa Martin-Green better known as ‘Sasha’ from The Walking Dead is set to captain the new ship U.S.S Discovery as Lieutenant Commander according to Entertainment Weekly.

It has been a bit of a roller coaster year for the new show with the showrunner Bryan Fuller leaving and the actual series launched pushed back to Summer 2017. Before he left Fuller confirmed Discovery will abandon the traditional captain for a Lieutenant Commander, Martin-Green will also be the first African-American woman to the franchise.

She will be joining Michelle Yeoh who will play Captain Georgiou, of the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou. Doug Jones as alien science officer Lt. Saru. Jones will play one of the many new alien races Fuller promised. Anthony Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert.

More recently 3 more cast have joined, all Klingon roles. Chris Obi (Roots) as T’Kuvma, a leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses and he’s joined by Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful), who will play Kol, a Klingon Commanding Officer, and protege of T’Kuvma. The pair will be joined by newcomer Mary Chieffo as L’Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of a Klingon ship.

The question that many The Walking Dead fans are asking, does this mean the end of the road for Sasha? With AMC/Fox UK’s premiere post-apocalyptic show now in its mid-season break, this news will probably spread rumours and gossip about her future on the show. Nothing has been confirmed on her TWD future but what we gather is that Martin-Green will continuously appear in both shows. This won’t be the first time the actress has appeared in several shows, which she did manage to appear in both Once Upon A Time and Good Girl whilst she was still on The Walking Dead. However, those roles were limited and Star Trek: Discovery role will be major one makes you wonder if Sasha is about to be ‘Lucilled’ in the last half of season 7.

CBS will be launching Star Trek: Discovery May 2017 on their premium streaming service CBS All Access. In UK&Ireland it will be Netflix that will stream the show sometime in 2017.
