It’s been a long long time since Nate Parker‘s The Birth Of A Nation left Sundance a big winner at festival awards as well as picking critical acclaim on the way too. Nearly 10 months on it’s nearly time for UK cinephiles to see the movie that created the early buzz and we have a new second UK Trailer and a new release date too.
A lot has happened since that festival sadly not in favour of the movie, creating a scandal which we won’t discuss. But thanks to recent events in U.S Presidential elections some folks believe the historic events of this movie could happen again. In the name of humanity we hope not but the story of Slavery in the USA, is one story that must be told and not forgotten so this won’t ever happen again.
Set in the antebellum South, The Birth Of A Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
This was a movie that was been set up to win big at the next Oscars, but since the skeletons revealed themselves, many of the critics have turned against the movie. We’re not saying those skeletons caused the American downfall of the movie, but those critics have said the movie is ‘messy’, ‘heavy-handed’. Like any movie, we will judge this after we see it for ourselves as there’s no better judge of anything than yourself.
The Birth Of a Nation now has a new UK&Irish cinema release date which now is no longer set for 2017 but next month 9th December. The film stars Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Aja Naomi King , Jackie Earle Hayley, Colman Domingo and Gabrielle Union.
