Last week we learned Duncan Jones Sci-fi Noir Mute finally started filming this week at last but now we know who will distribute it, Netflix. The news was broke on Empire’s Podcast by Alexander Skarsgård who said the film is to be a Netflix release with a date and cinema release.
“I think they’ll do what they did with Beasts Of No Nation.’ stated Skarsgård. The actor also shared some info on his own character too..“I’ve just got back from Dublin where Duncan showed me all the renderings and the visuals of it. And I’m very, very excited about it… It’s about a guy who was in an accident as a kid. He’s ex-Amish, so he lives a very monastic life: he doesn’t have a cellphone or anything like that. He’s left the [Amish] community but he still kinda follows the rules.”
Mute is an passion project for Jones, a project that’s been on the back burner since his debut release of Moon it’s been long reported that Mute is also set in same universe as Moon. As in how connected we don’t know at this stage apart from Skarsgård hinting Moon star Sam Rockwell could make an appearance.
The film itself is currently been filmed in Berlin and looks to have a Blade Runner-esque style story. A story that’s set in a Dystopian Berlin, 30 years into the future , a tale of Leo Beiler, a mute bartender who is tasked with tracking down his missing girlfriend. Skarsgård will play the bartender with Paul Rudd will play a surgeon who may have clues to the whereabouts of Leo’s girlfriend.
Netflix is really going for gold challenging not just home releases but also the cinema releases. With an ever increasing list of ‘Netflix Originals’ productions and features. With access to so called local cinemas increasingly impossible to certain parts of the country, the Streaming giants can fill that gap. Peter Kay may have told us garlic bread was the future in Phoenix Nights, the future might just be Netflix now.
Mute at this stage has no confirmed release date.
