Mike Mills Beginners was beautifully crafted movie of a man learns his father (Christopher Plummer) discovers his father has terminal cancer but also gay. It was a touching film of life and love, now 6 years on Mills returns to the meaning of life with 20th Century Women. Annette Bening leads the cast in a 1970’s based bohemian drama of 3 generations of women in a  film which is been tipped as an potential awards.Ahead of its premiere at New York Film Festival this October, now we have the first UK Trailer

20th Century Women tells the story of three remarkable women, each from a different era of the 20th century, coming together to help teach a teenage boy about life and love, sex and freedom, men and women.

Set in Santa Barbara in the summer of 1979, filled with punk-rock verve, 20th Century Women takes a humorous and heartfelt look at how we figure out who we are.

Beginners really celebrated life, acceptance and though the ending was sad there was a happy tone throughout it. This film feels has a similar tone and it helped Plummer gain him an Best supporting Oscar glory, you wonder if Bening will find herself in a similar position?

She is the motherly figure in the film with her onscreen son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), and the trailer doesn’t really tease us on how the 3 women are connected. Elle Fanning seems to be the seductive teen neighbour probably Jamie’s love interest. Greta Gerwig with her Bowie-esque hairstyle is the Punk photographer with plenty of aggression could she be Jamie’s sister? Rebellious unwilling to conform to her mothers bohemian laid back ways?

If we’re to go by what Mike Mills said this film is all about(to Variety), I can really connect “The film is an ode to the women who raised me; my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world.”

Annette Bening will have a hard task if she is nominated with so many strong films on the horizon. But like any movie even if this doesn’t get nominated, if it captures the essence of Mills previous films it still looks a potential fantastic film to look forward too.

20th Century Women doesn’t have an official UK&Irish cinema release date yet apart from Entertainment One stating it will be out 2017 (USA 25th December). The film also stars Billy Cudrup, Alia Shawkat.
