Fans of the legendary Japanese Animation House Studio Ghibli will been awe today(29th April) as Studiocanal (their UK distributor)launches Studio Ghibli Forever celebratory retrospective season which runs until Thursday 28th July, showcasing the work of the Japanese animation powerhouse over the last 30 years. The season is set up to showcase their brand new UK theatrical release from the studio, When Marnie Was There out on June 10th playing in original Japanese with English subtitles, as well as an English-language dubbed version

The season also includes a brand new English re-dub of 1991’s Only Yesterday, with the voices of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Daisy Ridley and Dev Patel.from its humble beginnings in 1984 with Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind to its most recent masterpiece, The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya.

New release When Marnie Was There (watch trailer), A shy, artistic Anna moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle, she stumbles upon an old mansion surrounded by marshes, and the mysterious young girl, Marnie, who lives there. The two girls instantly form a unique connection and friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh House again and again, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend.

Based on the young adult novel by Joan G. Robinson and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty), When Marnie Was There has been described as “Ghibli Gothic,” with its moonlit seascapes, glowing orchestral score, and powerful dramatic portrayals that build to a stormy climax.

The film features the voices of  Kiernan Shipka , Hailee Steinfeld, Ellen Burstyn and Kathy Bates, and is in UK cinemas from June 10th.
