Movies based on video games are always action packed with great characters that are already loved due to their game counterparts! Over the years all types of video games have been brought to the big screen, and to celebrate Ratchet & Clank coming in to cinemas on April 29th, we take a look at some of the best game to film adaptations.

Pixels

Everyone’s favourite retro video game characters make an appearance in Pixels starring Adam Sandler. But the characters cause havoc on earth intending to destroy it, Pac Man and Donkey Kong in particular. The creator of Pacman even has a cameo in the film.

Tron: Legacy

The sequel was distributed by Disney after the original 1980 film became a cult hit. The film is visually similar to the arcade video game Tron, and the son of a virtual world designer goes looking for his father and ends up inside the digital world.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Angelina Jolie stars in the title role as the badass hero Lara Croft and was undoubtedly the perfect actress for the role. The film is based on the popular video game series Tomb Raider, and is full of action scenes and intense fight sequences which Jolie executes flawlessly.

Ratchet & Clank

Everyone’s favourite gaming duo is back to kick some asteroid – but this time on the big screen. The film is based on the very first Ratchet & Clank video game, where they will have to fight evil and save the day. The excellent voice cast features John Goodman and Paul Giamatti.

Wreck it Ralph

We know Wreck it Ralph isn’t based on an actual video game, but it is based on gaming franchises with guest appearances from well-loved gaming characters. For example sonic the Hedgehog and the ghosts from Pacman. In the film the characters live in their own world, outside of their game. (review)

Need for Speed

Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper star as race car drivers in this action film based on the popular video game series. They play rivals racers in this story about love and revenge, and spend the film driving fast and expensive cars.(review)

Super Mario Bros.

This film evolved in to a cult classic and is loosely based on the game of the same name, but with a darker approach. The film follows two brothers that are plumbers, and Luigi falls in love with Daisy and comes to her rescue (sound familiar?). Other characters from the game appear in the film such as Toad and King Koopa. (review)
