After his resurgence on the big screen it looks like Matthew McConaughey continues that momentum with Free State Of Jones in another character fighting injustice. In the film’s first trailer takes us from the gay community of Dallas the battle fields of American Civil War rebels against the Confederate Army.
Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight(McConaughey), and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.
Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
You would think with the amount of Civil War movies that have been made, every inch of the history,story from the war must be covered? Think again! Free State Of Jones is a based on true events arc which takes a more unconventional approach to the war. Delivering a gritty reality of the events, a story that little unknown to those who may only have a basic understanding of the war.This looks epic film that’s not scared to cover topics which now aren’t as controversial but during the film’s period a white man having a relationship with a black woman (or black man with a white woman)was unheard of. Knight married a former slave Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) but it seems Knight liked to turn heads and raise eyebrows. There seems there was a mixed race community in the South which really fascinating film to watch.
Free State of Jones will arrive in UK&Ireland on 27th May (USA 13th May), film stars Mahershala Ali and Keri Russell.
