Today we open the first door of our advent calendars but it’s also start of business end of awards and Lenny Abrahamson‘s Room is one of those contenders. Today thanks to Studiocanal we get a look at the film’s UK trailer…
Based on the best selling novel of the same by Emma Donoghue, Room is a riveting emotional journey about the power of love, limitless imagination and the strength of the human spirit, an unparalleled celebration of the bond between parent and child. One of a young mother (Brie Larsson)who creates an whole universe in the room for her 5 year old son Jack(Jacob Tremblay) they have been held captive. When she decides to escape she puts everything at risk but to give Jack a chance to see the world does not live in a television and discover the thrilling world that’s out there.
The film has played a few festivals this year and I have to admit despite been a big fan of the director’s last film Frank, I have selfishly ignored any previous footage. It certainly plays on the loving bond between a parent and their children, how they attempt to shelter them from the horrors of the outside world. John Hillcoat’s The Road is an fine example of a similar bond there is even a surreal sense of Ma’s portrayal that could easily be something Yorgos Lanthimos would mould.
The trailer doesn’t fully play on the dark tone, but more on your heart strings, the innocence of children and with fear but also wonder of joy as Jack discovers that world outside. Most of all it showcases why Brie Larrson and Jacob Tremblay are been touted for awards success if not some Oscar recognition, rightly so.
Room also stars Joan Allen, Sean Bridgers, and William H. Macy with the film getting a UK&Irish cinematic release.
