Strong Women in Film (Mad Max:Fury Road)


Films are packed full of kick ass women, never afraid to get their hands dirty and stand up to anyone who gets in in their way. Mad Max: Fury Road garnered critical acclaim for it’s representation of women with Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa gaining iconic heroine status. On Monday 21st September you can be one of the first to own Mad Max: Fury Road on Digital HD and to celebrate we take take a look at some of the kick ass women in film.

Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games

Jennifer Lawrence plays the girl on fire, a rolemodel for teenage girls everywhere never afaid to fight for what she believes in. Set in a dystopic future America where the extravagant people of the Capitol live a life of luxury compared to everyone else. Katniss leads a revolution against President Snow and those in power, challenging the opressive regime and ripping up the Hunger Games rulebook.

Ellen Ripley, Alien

Female heroines don’t come much more iconic than Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Alien. An officer on board the spaceship Nostromo, Ripley has to protect herself against the Alien as it kills off each of her crew members. Remember “in space no one can hear you scream.”

Sarah Connor, Terminator

Audiences are first introduced to Sarah Connor as a timid waitress in The Terminator but we get to see her grow into a fearless heroine throughout the film series. Determined to protect her son, Connor is more than willing to put up a fight to protect the future of mankind.

Dr Ryan Stone, Gravity

A story of isolation, survival and determination Sandra Bullock is Dr Ryan Stone, a scientist who finds herself alone and adrift in the emptiness of space facing various adversities. Stone captivates the audience as their only companion for most of the film; she shows the strength and courage to overcome the toughest obstacles. A film that explores the preservation of the human spirit and the ability to rediscover a desire for life.

Erin Brockovich

Julia Roberts bagged an Oscar, Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her peformance as real life lawyer, Erin Brockovich. Based on a real life story, the film sees Brockovich, an unemployed single mother, almost single handedly bring down a California power company after they’ve been accused of polluting the local water supply.

Princess Leia, Star Wars

Princess Leia is argaubly the perfect woman for many men, not ony does she rock killer hair buns but she isn’t afriad to roll up her sleeves and get involved in some intergalactic fighting! This is one lady who isn’t afraid to say what she thinks and even stand up to the charm of Hans Solo.

Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

An expert in computer hacking and a photographic memory, Lisbeth Salander is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. After a harrowing childhood, Salander isn’t afraid to severly punish any abusive men with torturous techniques. Do not upset her.

Imperator Furiosa, Mad Max

Mad Max: Fury Road shows the struggle of a society led by a greed-ridden cult leader, where gas and water are scarce commodities. It’s up to Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron who leads a group of wives on a lengthy road battle of survival to restore order in this post-apocalyptic wasteland.
