We’ve already seen she can hold a note in mega-musical Mamma Mia, now Meryl Streep is taking it to the next level and playing an aging rock star trying to make amends with her family in Ricki and The Flash. Streep is of course no stranger to awards herself, having being nominated for a whopping 19 Academy Awards (of which 3 she won), Ricki and The Flash also has two Oscar winners behind the scenes: Jonathan Demme as director (he won for Silence of the Lambs) and Diablo Cody as writer (who won for Juno). Whilst I would hesitate to say this film is an Oscar frontrunner (Streep’s turn as Emmeline Pankhurst in December’s Suffragette is more of a shoo-in), it certainly has a quality team behind it.
Synopsis – Ricki and The Flash tells the story of Ricki Rendazzo, a guitar heroine who made a world of mistakes as she followed her dreams of rock-and-roll stardom. Returning home, Ricki gets a shot at redemption and a chance to make things right as she faces the music with her family.
In this short featurette watch the stars and creators of the film explore the complex family relationships on and off-screen…
Ricki and The Flash also stars Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, and Rick Springfield. The film is released in UK cinemas on 4th September.
