Although film sometimes borrows very heavily from the world of video games, video game-to-film adaptations have never really gone that well. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the Resident Evil franchise is the standout hits, but the recent Need for Speed film failed to draw in the crowds at the box office. However, with critically acclaimed director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) working on a Warcraft film to be released next year, and Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starring in next year’s Assassin’s Creed adaptation, are the tides turning?
Hoping to lead the way this Summer is Hitman: Agent 47, the second film based on the Hitman games. Writers Skip Woods and Michael Finch are on board, the men responsible for Swordfish and the updated Predators respectively, proving that these guys are no stranger to crafting a strong, smart action film. First time director Aleksander Bach also seems to have found his action style, judging from the latest thrilling trailer.
Synopsis – HITMAN: AGENT 47 centres on an elite assassin (Rupert Friend) who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research – and forty-six earlier Agent clones — endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence.
His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.
Hitman: Agent 47 also stars Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto, Ciarán Hinds, and Thomas Kretschmann, and hits UK screens on 27th August.
