Jake Gyllenhaal is going into boxing drama Southpaw coming off the back of a career best performance as eerie Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. With that being said, the Gyllenhaal of Southpaw certainly looks a lot different to his withdrawn Nightcrawler character, with the actor having piled on the pounds to convincingly play a middleweight boxer.
Southpaw follows the story of Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal), a middleweight boxer who is hungry for fame and fortune. Just as it appears he has made it, tragedy strikes, and he now has troubles outside of the ring to fight with.
This new TV spot is pretty much a watered-down, thirty-second version of the previous 2 and a half-minute trailer, that gave a bit too much about the film away.
After a long time in development hell (with Eminem supposedly set to star) Training Day and The Equaliser director Antoine Fuqua has jumped on board to helm the film. Although Fuqua’s past record is a bit patchy, he has a great cast (including Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker) and a lead actor coming of the back from one of his best performances in his corner.
Southpaw also stars Naomie Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, and Beau Knapp and will land in UK cinemas on 24th July.
