DVD Review- The Road Is Jericho

chris-jerichoAs a life long Jerichoholic, you can only imagine how happy I was to see this DVD/Blu Ray set get announced. I’ve always been a fan of WWE DVD releases where we get to hear from the superstars themselves about their life as a professional wrestler rather than the DVDs that are just matches. Luckily in this one, we get both. It follows Chris Jericho as he is chauffeured from New York to Pennsylvania in the back of a very swanky limo as he talks us through his favourite and most historic matches from his career.

I liked the way they built this DVD up with us getting Jericho in a casual laid-back way, where he can talk to us about his matches. It did occasionally make me get the image of when you’ve been called into the principal’s office to get a telling off, but I think once the DVD gets going this seems to disappear, as Jericho looks a lot more relaxed.

In terms of content available, any wrestling fan will know that Jericho has a wide variety of matches to choose from to showcase his career. I did feel that there could have been a few more from his ECW/WCW days so that people who haven’t followed his rise to stardom as close can get to see exactly where he came from, especially with his early cruiserweight matches. Luckily the few they chose were instant classics (Especially the very fast paced match with Ultimo Dragon).

One thing I would like to point out from this set is the fact that even though this is a set that is there to highlight the career of Chris Jericho, not all of his matches are wins for him, unlike a lot of other career DVDs that have been released. They have been picked simply to showcase his abilities in putting on a great match for the fans. Also, even though this is a current WWE release, we get all of the matches unedited, so we still get blood (Not blurred or greyed out) and the old WWF logo (Again not blurred out).

There are some fantastic matches to watch but it’s hard to single out one specific event to mention, simply becauseTHE_ROAD_IS_JERICHO_DVD there are so many great moments through his career. I was surprised that we didn’t get his matches at Vengeance 2001 where he beat both The Rock and Steve Austin in the same night to become the first ever Undisputed Champion, but there are still plenty others to watch.

Unfortunately there is one match that didn’t make the cut, but it’s one that has been left out for a reason, and that is it included Chris Benoit where they faced each other in the Ladder match at Royal Rumble 2001, which for me was one of my favourites. Some may argue that it should still be included regardless of the Benoit situation with WWE but until they decide to acknowledge that he has a great wrestling history, we won’t get it.

Overall I feel that this DVD/Blu Ray set should be at the top of any wrestling fans list to watch. It has everything you need, great matches, fast paced, real technical wrestling and we even get that true Jericho humor in there too in between the matches. The only down side to it is the lack of a Benoit appearance (When they have had so many great matches together), but I can understand why he would be left out of a WWE sanctioned DVD.
