DVD Review – The Destruction Of The Shield

DESTRUCTION_OT_SHIELD_DVDThe DVD set titled “The Destruction of the Shield” is WWE’s latest release highlighting the career of not 1 but 3 of their current superstars. What’s interesting about this is, they are still all currently active and making their way up through the ranks. Here we will see them as the one of most dominant groups WWE has ever seen, going from being unknown, up to their current run as singles competitors.

It splits off onto 3 different journeys, starting with Seth Rollins. Here we get to hear and see where he has come from, showing us photos and little video clips from his early wrestling work before signing with WWE. It then shows us Dean Ambrose’s early career. During these we get a few interviews with Daniel Bryan as he met both of these in his early career at Ring of Honor. Finally in the intro section we get Roman Reigns. Here is slightly different because although he has an early wrestling career before WWE, he started in American Football, so we get a few clips of him playing football, along side his second cousins The Usos, which then takes us through his detailed family history of being part of the Samoans.

We’re then brought to NXT where it shows Seth Rollins winning the NXT Championship, showing that he will be going on to great things one day. Ambrose and Reigns have their own success in NXT and although they didn’t win the gold, they proved that they also have what it takes to get noticed. This is what led to people putting the 3 of them together. They finally get put together into the group known as The Shield ready for their debut on WWE TV at Survivor Series 2012, where they interfere in the John Cena vs Ryback title match. We get to see them go on and win the Tag Titles and the US Title, then take on Evolution, which leads to their split. We’re then taken through the rivalry between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins following the break up. Along side with this we have Roman Reigns feud with Randy Orton. All 3 trying to make a name for themselves as a singles wrestler.

Although the main part of the DVD is detailed in their early careers, I feel that it seems to highlight Seth Rollins more than giving each wrestler a 3rd of the air time. It has a lot of interviews with the 3, and with many other WWE superstars giving their insight into who the Shield are and where they will go in the future.
Saying this, I feel that this part of the DVD is far too short for my liking. They had many rivalries in the 2 years they were together that could have been highlighted. Luckily the DVD set is saved with its extra content. There are a few NXT and FCW matches, a lot of WWE TV matches from many PPVs and also an interview about each of the 20 matches available too.

I don’t want to put anyone off getting this set, because I’m a fan of the Shield, like a lot of WWE fans, and they have a lot of great matches together so as stated earlier, the extras will keep you happy for a while, it’s just let down by the documentary section.
