Ahead of its release on Friday, Paramount Pictures have sent us a new featurette and clip from The Gambler. A remake of the 1974 crime-drama starring James Caan, The Gambler has a great team behind it, having been written by William Monahan (The Departed) and directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).
The film tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a literature professor and an ardent gambler. Deep in debt, he borrows money from his long-suffering mother (Jessica Lange) and some nasty loan sharks (John Goodman and Michael Kenneth Williams). To make matters worse, he has now become romantically entangled with one of his students (Brie Larson), and proceeds to bet the borrowed money.
In the below clip from the film we see Bennett in discussion with one of the loan sharks (Goodman), who is explaining the consequences if Bennett doesn’t pay him back.
The featurette below sees the cast and director discuss Wahlberg’s dedication to the role, and the man himself also has a few words to say.
With an excellent cast, and a talented team behind it, The Gambler looks like it could be a hit. Although it’s been garnering some lukewarm reviews, our writer Andrew McArthur certainly enjoyed it giving it four out of 5 stars. You can read Andrew’s review here.
The Gambler opens in cinemas on Friday 23rd January.Powered by Sidelines
