Ahead of its release next week, Lionsgate have sent us a new TV spot for Johnny Depp’s latest film, Mortdecai. The film is based on the 1973 novel, “Don’t Point That Thing At Me” by Kyril Bonfiglioli, which is from a series of books about the titular Mortdecai, known for their dry and black humour.
Depp plays Charles Mortdecai, a debonair art dealer, and is recruited by the British government to recover a priceless piece of art that has gone missing. Mortdecai must dash across the globe sporting a glorious moustache, and fight off angry Russians and international terrorists to try to reclaim the painting.
Judging from this TV spot and the below trailer, Mortdecai looks like exceedingly good fun, with Depp relishing every moment as the aristocratic art dealer. With supporting turns from a starry cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan Mcgregor, Paul Bettany, and Jeff Goldblum, Mortdecai could be very promising. Here’s hoping it’s as entertaining as these clips suggests, and keeps the wit and warmth of the books.
Mortdecai and his moustache romp into cinemas on 23rd January.
