DVD Review – Begin Again (2014)

Begin-Again_Keira-Knightley

With an incredible casting including the likes of Keira Knightley (Atonement), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers Assemble) and James Corden (Gavin and Stacey) comes another feel good film from John Carney(writer of Once).

The film follows Gretta (Knightley) and Dave (Maroon 5’s Adam Levine), college sweethearts who love to make music. When Dave gets offered a record deal, Gretta happily follows him on the journey, until the fame starts to go to his head, and he cheats on her.

Alone in New York, Gretta goes to a bar with her friend Steve (James Corden) who persuades her to get up on stage and sing. Dan (Mark Ruffalo), an ex record producer witnesses her singing and from then on an immediate friendship is made and the magic John Carney is known for begins.

With the help of Steve, and Troublegum (Celo Green) Gretta and Dan go around New York and record an album.

Despite Keira Knightley admitting she can’t sing, she does a very convincing job within this role and has great onscreen chemistry with both Mark Ruffalo and James Corden.

Ruffalo brings a likeness to the role of Dan. Despite at the beginning of the film not having much luck with life, getting fired from his record company, Mark brings something comedic to the role, and that scene in particular.

Even though Adam Levine is known for his singing, he did a terrific job in his acting debut.

With catchy songs including ‘Tell Me if You Wanna Go Home’,’Lost Stars’ and ‘A Higher Place’, Begin Again is a film you will love if you’re a fan of both Once and feel good films.
