You know the drill: Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) take drugs, they walk/drive/fly somewhere, they crack wise, they get chased, something explodes, Neil Patrick Harris arrives and hilarity ensues. Ha ha ha, or in this case… ho ho ho.
It’s Christmas Eve and Harold’s tree (lovingly grown by his menacing father-in-law) goes up in smoke, forcing the duo to wander around town in search of a new one; through sordid drug-fuelled parties with Russian gangsters, backstage at a Broadway Christmas show, and up a tree in Claymation. As usual it’s a thinly disguised excuse to foist a series of comedy set-pieces upon the audience, one after another, again and again. Oh the japes those boys get into!
It’s an archetypal, grade-A, slacker comedy. That it’s probably best enjoyed in the same state of chemical enhancement that the boys themselves are fond of, is simultaneously the most honest appraisal, best commendation, and also biggest indictment one can give this particular franchise.
It’s a comedy which lives or dies on the basis that: drugged-up kids, nymphomaniac teenagers, waffle-making robots and Jewish people are inherently funny. Subtle it ain’t.
In many respects it’s a case of ‘as you were’, for a series which never breaks any new comedic ground, but does seem to have found its niche pretty well. Writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have stuck to the script in many respects, barely deviating from the same formula that was applied to the two previous Harold and Kumar outings. Chances are if you have already seen either of the two preceding instalments, you’ll already know where you stand on this one.
The only change of tack is the addition of a number of 3D sight-gags: flying Ping-Pong balls, hats and bags of crack cocaine, which must have made perfect sense in a 3D screening but, when watched on a 2D monitor are (amusingly) rendered useless.
