Tonight the new tradition of film studios releasing a preview of an upcoming trailer when we get a sneak peek at the trailer for the heavily delayed Red Dawn remake. Those old enough to remember the 1984/85 version about a group of young teens lead by Patrick Swayze take up arms to defend their town (then country overall) on the brink of World War 3 against invading Soviet armies. Back then the film came out in the final days of the cold war so the film may have had more significance compared today’s politics, enemies and allies do change and for the new version the film’s invaders where originally the Chinese but the world is smaller and to give the film a chance to play the invaders are the North Koreans. Good old CGI has altered things like the flags but one thing the producers didn’t think about North Koreans ad Chinese people don’t look the same despite been geographical neighbours!
Many people don’t actually know there is a remake as the film was made several years ago and like Cabin In The Woods found itself a victim of MGM’s financial problems so it gathered dust on the shelf until Film District picked up the rights late last year. There is one advantage with the film’s delay 2 of it’s stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson have went onto make 2 box office hits Thor & The Hunger Games so it should help the film do better when it’s released. Looking at the 52 seconds of the footage we do see it does look like they have played it safe keeping as close to the original as possible so hopefully when the full trailer arrives we can see how close or how different the new version will be.
No word on the UK release however the film is getting a November 21st release date. Red Dawn stars Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Josh Peck, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Connor Cruise.
In Red Dawn, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.
