After describing the production of his Robocop reboot as Hell it certainly has been for Joseph Padilha when regards to play his villain. After last week with Hugh Laurie pulling out of negotiations to play the films antagonist (a role the English actor been connected to since June), with filming about to start shortly, the short notice has left Padilha frustrated but now he does seem to have his master villain and a better choice, Michael Keaton.
Keaton wil play Raymond Sellars, the greedy wealthy CEO of Omnicorp, the corporation that builds Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) into RoboCop, anunstoppable law enforcement cyborg for its own means. Director Padilha had this to say about the former Batman/Beetlejuice actor joining the cast:
“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.”
Keaton hasn’t been doing much live action films recently with Penthouse (with Michelle Monaghan ) coming out next year with The Other Guys in 2010 the last time we saw him on the screen (he has been voice acting in Toy Story franchise too). Michael Keaton will be joining Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jennifer Ehle, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Michael K. Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste . Production is due to start in September with the remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 cult classic set for a 9th August 2013 release in UK, Ireland and USA.
