With Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar now available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray, we wanted to look at other famous biopics from within the Warner Bros catalogue. Here are a few other biopics that have set pulses racing in recent years:
J. Edgar tells the story of the founding of the FBI by J Edgar Hoover, who was feared and admired in equal part for his role as head of the FBI. The film explores the public and private relationships of Hoover, who was exceptional at distorting the truth as well as upholding it, and was often swayed by the darker side of power. Clint Eastwood directed the film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role of Hoover and Naomi Watts as Hoover’s long time secretary and confidant Helen Gandy.

Invictus is also directed by Clint Eastwood and tells the story of the Nelson Mandela’s rise to power during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa. Starring Matt Damon as the captain of the South African Rugby Union team and Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, it tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team to unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s rugby team as they make their historic run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match.

The Blind Side is an Oscar winning film, released in 2010 and based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who take in a homeless teenage African-American, Michael “Big Mike” Oher. Michael has no idea who his father is and his mother is a drug addict. Michael has had little formal education and few skills to help him learn. Leigh Anne soon takes charge however, as is her nature, ensuring that the young man has every opportunity to succeed. Starring Sandra Bullock as the mother who takes a chance on a homeless boy, she won an Oscar for her depiction of this real life tale, and the true story of a young man who went from being abandoned to success as a pro-football player.

Camelot is a 1967 film adaptation of a hit Broadway show, telling the story of the complicated love triangle between Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot. Starring Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave the story is told as a flashback, highlighting the epic battle for Camelot between King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. The film was an award season hit, being nominated for five Academy Awards and winning three in total including Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Music Scoring. It also won three Golden Globes, including Richard Harris winning for Best Actor.

Amadeus is a 1984 period drama adapted from a stage play, which tells the story of Antonio Salieri’s relationship with Mozart. Salieri recognised his genius, but was incredibly jealous of his musical talent and used this to send Mozart on a downward spiral and into financial ruin which ultimately led to his death. The film was another award winner, nominated for over 50 awards and winning 40, including a highly sought after 8 Academy Awards, 4 BAFTAs and 4 Golden Globes.
