To coincide with its screening at Cannes Film Festival which kicks off today with its first full day an teaser trailer for MANIAC the remake of the 1980 William Lustig flick has appeared online. To many Elijah Wood will always be associated with Lord Of The Rings, voicing animated penguins or escaping incoming meteors in Deep Impact but in a millions years could you picture him been a disturbed maniac serial killer? Probably not however Robert Rodriguez gave us a big clue in 2005 with Sin City that Frodo had a darker side when he played cannibal killer Kevin.
Directed by Franck Kalfoun, Wood plays Frank, a psychopath who runs a mannequin store who takes women’s scalps as ‘bloody’ trophies as well as decorate his mannequins. His childhood was probably destroyed by abuse from his domineering mother so his lack of respect for the female population as you’ll see from the trailer is non existent. I’ve never seen the original 1980’s slasher but I know it’s a crazy cult hit certainly not a film you would show to your aunty unless have a dark underline for doing it!The new version definitely NSFW, so are you ready to see Elijah Wood’s darker side the script comes from Alexandre Aja who brought us The Hills Have Eyes remake, Piranha 3D remake so we can say he knows a thing or two about this genre!
