2012 Oscar Nominations Announced, Hugo And The Artist Lead The Way

Earlier this afternoon 84th Oscar Academy Awards nominations were announced and I do hope you had a chance to catch today’s live stream. You could really say it was business as usual with some surprises as well a few surprising omissions including no big nod’s for Nicholas Winding Refn’s DRIVE (just for editing), even with the positive reviews from stateside Tintin was ignored in best Animation. Other so called shock’s where no Michael Fassbender or Albert Brooks nods, Jonah Hill as best supporting actor caught me by surprise, some sites are shocked by Gary Oldman been nominated for best actor in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but looking at nominations Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a far better film than some of the other hopefuls.I was sad to see Lynne Ramsey’s We Need To Talk About Kevin not eve getting anything not even a nomination for Tilda Swinton which looks like another snub like Palm D’or the film should have picked up from last years Cannes festival.

So today’s big winners where Martin Scorese’s HUGO picking up 11 nominations with The Artist picking up 10 nominations, War Horse, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which I’m glad is getting some credit it’s due espically for Rooney Mara) and Moneyball each have 6 nominations while The Descendants has 5. You could say ‘it’s the usual suspects’!, full list of nominations below:

This afternoon in Berlin I have learned that I was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Actor. You may have heard this before, but it has never been truer than it is for me today, it is extremely humbling, gratifying, and delightful to have your work recognized by the Academy, and to join the celebrated ranks of previous nominees and colleagues. Amazing.” —Gary Oldman, Berlin
