As we prepare for Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion to outbreak in UK & Irish cinemas on October 21st, the marketing train has kicked off for his next flick Haywire starring Gina Carano alongside Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Channing Tatum.
Steven Soderbergh is a frustrating person to appreciate, not in his films he’s made but actually understanding what he’s doing next. For a few years he has been announcing he is to retire from film-making (Haywire to be his last directed movie) to pursue his love for art. When Contagion marketing kicked off so did the gossip that he’s not going to retire then he is going to retire, well he is now one of The Hunger Games location directors, now been connected to several other projects (magic mike, man from u.n.c.l.e, liberace)is he retiring? Who Knows?!
What I have noticed with Soderbergh his knack of choosing unknowns into lead actors in successful films like Sasha Grey a young porn star who ends up been the star of a arthouse flick Girlfriend Experience, so for Haywire an action thriller we have MMA star Gina Carano going to be a hit too? Possibly in the action genre as we haven’t had a dominant female lead since Cynthia Rothrock. A big dash of a girl who can kick a man’s ass for fun, a big dose of 1980’s style thriller fun we have have a recipe for a potential good movie! In fashion they seem to turn back the clock for new designs so its looking like films are looking at the decades for that fresh kick of enthusiasm when it comes to new movies.
