Feature:The Essential Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is without a doubt one of the biggest movie stars in the world – arguably the biggest. He can open blockbusters on his name alone, and he is one of those actors that is always watchable, no matter what he is in. September sees him return to the role of Jack Sparrow with the release of fourth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides, on 3D Blu-Ray, Double Play and DVD. Which gives us the perfect opportunity to run down Depp’s greatest performances…

Edward Scissorhands
Johnny Depp made his name as the star of teen detective TV show 21 Jump Street, which cemented him as a teen idol. He was quick to subvert this image tough, appearing in John Waters satirical musical Cry Baby. But it was his turn as the titular hero of this dark fairytale that established Depp as not just a pretty face. It was also the first of many collaborations between Depp and director Tim Burton, including Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. (imdb)

Donnie Brasco
This classic crime drama told the real life story of undercover FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone, who adopted the Brasco alias when he infiltrates the mob. Depp easily held his own against screen legend and gangster movie icon Al Pacino, and was completely believable as a man torn between two identities and differing codes of honour.(imdb)

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
Many felt Hunter S Thompson’s classic piece of counter-culture reportage was unfilmable, but Terry Gilliam’s surreal adaption proved them wrong. Depp is electrifying in a film where it would be very easily to be overshadowed by the effects, and he nailed the eccentric Thompson perfectly. He researched the role by meeting with him in real life, and they remained good friends until the journalist’s death. Depp went on to narrate Gonzo, a documentary about Thompson’s life, and even paid for his ashes to be fired from a 150ft canon, as per his final request. (imdb)

Blow
Depp again starred in a real life crime story, this time playing George Jung, the infamous cocaine dealer who went from Weymouth, Massachusetts to become part of Pablo Escobar’s notorious Medellin Cartel. Depp delivers an excellent and atypical performance, eschewing all his real life confidence and cool to play a naive man swept up by the ride and way out of his depth.(imdb)

Finding Neverland
This biography of Peter Pan author J M Barrie, also starred Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman, and featured Depp delivering an impeccable British accent. Some questioned the film glossing over some of the possibly darker elements of Barrie’s story, but in truth the film is just a genuinely heartwarming story of the inspiration for a classic children’s tale. Depp went on to be Oscar nominated for his performance.(imdb)

Public Enemies
Depp played legendary bank robber John Dillinger, pursued by FBI Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), in Michael Mann’s period crime thriller. Mann took the controversial option of shooting the film hand held, on digital cameras, giving the film a look more associated with documentaries than historical fiction. It worked a treat, however, bringing an immediacy to the film, and Depp’s vibrant, exciting performance definitely adds to this. (imdb)

Pirates of The Caribbean: On Strange Tides
Johnny Depp has always been a great actor, but it was his role as swashbuckling buccaneer Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates that truly made him an international superstar. The film was such a hit that it has gone to produce three blockbuster sequels, the latest of which, Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, comes to 3D Blu-Ray, Double Play and DVD on 12 September. The fourth instalment of the phenomenal series has already taken over $1 Billion at the worldwide box office and once again delivers thrills, adventure, humour, action and excitement by the keg load.
