Last night via  his  official Facebook page , Peter Jackson has announced 2 more additions to THE HOBBIT cast list, Lost star Evangeline Lily and Dame Edna better known as Australian actor Barry Humphries.Jackson revealed that Lily will play a woodland elf called Tauriel a new character, her name meaning ‘Daughter of Mirkwood’ and Humphries  will play the role of  “the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum.”One thing Jackson made clear was that Tauriel will not be having a love connection with Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom and will be again in the new movies).

Here is the full statement:

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings!  We’ve finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon… But today, I’m thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I’m also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we’re looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

You’ll also notice in the last part of the statement Peter Jackson confirms Luke Evans and Benedict Cumberbatch’s  involvement in the movie and if you remember Cuberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes co -actor (and now Bilbo Baggins ) Martin Freeman let it slip at the recent TV Awards. Its seems Jackson has got his main cast in place possibly a few minor parts maybe one or two big parts still to be sorted, the location spotting /principle shooting is now kicked off  its nearly time to get on with the show and start bringing THE HOBBIT to life on the big screen!!!

THE HOBBIT:AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will be with us 14th December 2012 with the final part coming 13th December 2013 with THE HOBBIT:THERE AND BACK AGAIN. The cast includes returnees from Lord Of The Rings Sir Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloo, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis with new cast of Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch , Aidan Turner, Evangeline Lily and Barry Humphries.
