Red Cliff or Chi Bi as it’s called in China was actually released in 2008 in China and it was released on 12th June in UK and is now on DVD. The movie is an epic four and half hour movie so only part one has been released with part 2 I believe in 2010 for UK. November 20th will eventually see Red Cliff been released in USA and it feels strange that UK have a movie well in advance than USA, its usually the other way round.
Red cliff is set in 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever. (source IMDB).
John Woo hasn’t lit Hollywood on fire since he arrived possibly because of the high expectation from him due to his success in the Hong Kong movie scene with Great movies like Hard Boiled and The Killer, but Red Cliff is him back on form. In this interview he talks about the movie and his next project “Flying Tigers” about a small American core that helped the Chinese Air Force fight the Japanese and said it will full of amazing action scenes, filming starts next summer I cant wait!!!
I’ve also included the US trailer and if you go to trailer page you can read 2 reviews on red cliff as well.(The movie (part 1) is out in UK/Ireland on DVD now)
