Natural disaster films are a well-loved part of cinema: they’re dramatic, thrilling and chock-full of CGI (and we can’t get enough of them!) If you’re as big a fan as we are, the exhilarating new action-thriller Hurricane Heist, in UK cinemas from April 6th, is set to blow you away, as a team of hackers use the cover of an unstoppable and deadly hurricane to infiltrate a vulnerable US Treasury facility and steal $600m.

2012 had everybody’s hearts racing when it was released back in 2009 – the Mayans predicted the end of the world, so of course an action-packed film was released to mark it! Geologist Adrian Helmsley discovers evidence that the world will come to an end in 2012, via a series of catastrophic natural disasters, informing world leaders who quietly begin preparing for the event, never releasing information to the public in an attempt to save the richest and most powerful. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes being to wreak havoc on the planet and all the while a struggling writer desperately tries to save his family.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
In this modern classic of a weather-disaster film, a Paleo-climatologist realises the world is about to be plunged into a new Ice Age after the earth’s climate shifts dramatically following the melting of the polar ice caps. Professor Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) desperately races to find his son and get him to safety in the warmer south of the country. Will they be rescued in time to survive?
The Impossible (2012)
Based on the incredible real-life story of a family caught up in the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, The Impossible stars a well-known cast including Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland. A family are on a Christmas holiday in beautiful Thailand when a Tsunami hits the beach they’re staying at, separating the distraught family of five. While two of the children are sent away with a family heading to safety, the third sets out to find his parents and reunite the family.
Los Angeles is shaken when a seemingly harmless earthquake is actually the beginning of a volcanic eruption below the city! Deadly fireballs and lava originating from the famous La Brea Tarpits begin to consume the area, catching locals by surprise. The head of the city’s Emergency Management department teams up with Dr Amy Barnes when his investigation into the strange seismic activity is cut short by the disaster – can these two mortals save their fellow citizens from something much bigger than themselves?
The year is 2019 and global warming has reached the point where catastrophic weather is plaguing countries across the world. Gerard Butler stars as Jake Lawson, the architect of a weather-controlling solution nicknamed “Dutch Boy” which has been implemented to stabilise the climate. The invention’s success is short-lived as numerous weather-based catastrophes begin cropping up around the world. Jake and his siblings, Max and Sarah, must work to put a stop to the crisis and save the planet.
