Shape Of Water Leads The Line In 2018 BAFTA Nominations

Shape Of Water Leads The Line In 2018 BAFTA Nominations

The EE British Academy Film Awards have been announced it’s 2018 BAFTA nominations. Guillermo Del Toro‘s Fantasy The Shape Of Water leads the nominees. The movie yet to be released in the UK leads the pack with 12 nominations.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri a big player so far in the awards season (and a big winner at the Golden Globes)and Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour will run it close, both with 9 nominations each. Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 both scored 8 nominations each, its expected both will go head to head on the technical awards.

Gary Oldman is fantastic as Winston Churchill (Darkest Hour) and he will be up against it in the best actor category. Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Jamie Bell (Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool) and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name).

Frances McDormand will be a favourite for Best Female Actor for 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She will face stiff opposition from Sally Hawkins for The Shape Of Water who plays a cleaner at a secret army facility who falls in love with the Amphibian alien subject. The fascinating thing about her role is her character is mute. Saoirse Ronan (Ladybird), Annette Bening (Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) are also in the running.

Best Supporting Roles in both female and male categories are just as strong as the Leading categories a sign of a powerful year. The most notable is Christopher Plummer (All The Money In The World), Octavia Spencer (The Shape Of Water) and Hugh Grant (Paddington).

Today The British Academy of Film and Television Arts also announced Joanna Lumley will be the Awards new host. After 12 years of hosting Stephen Fry stepped down as the regular host. This is great news that not just that a major TV show has a female host but also an older woman hosting the show. Over the past decade, many have criticised the BBC for not hiring women to host many shows especially older women. Also after the number of sexual harassment cases and the unacceptable way the industry has treated women over the years.

The one criticism of this year’s nominations is the lack of/ non-existent of any nominated female directors. The likes of Ava DuVernay’s Mudbound, Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman all movies that gained critical appraise last year.

The EE British Academy Film Awards aka The Baftas will take place on Sunday 18 February at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Joanna Lumley and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD.

Here’s the full list of nominations.
