First Image For Darkest Hour Gary Oldman As Winston Churchill

Sometime tomorrow we will get the first chance to look at Joe Wright‘s Darkest Hour but to wet our appetites for that launch Universal Pictures has sent us the first official image. The movie stars Gary Oldman, not in that forgettable 2012 disaster, but Oldman as Winston Churchill.

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (BAFTA-Award® winner Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.

As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a sceptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

The January release date could suggest Universal Pictures have a lot of faith that the movie could be a potential Oscar Contender.Wright is a better of an expert when it comes to period based biopics and amazingly the director himself has never received a nomination despite many of his movies receiving nods. There will be eyes on Oldman too who looks like he’s gone through a great transformation to play the iconic prime minister could he get recognition himself. Could he go up against Brian Cox as Churchill?

Darkest Hour is set for 12th January 2018 UK and Irish release date and will star Stephen Dillane, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Kristin Scott Thomas.
