In the early 1970s, the late great David Bowie sang about ‘Life On Mars’, over 40 years later there seems to be living on our mobile phones. From social media to text messages, many with a phone will paint that messages with little colourful icons, this August we will see why they call our mobiles ‘Smartphones. Today Sony Pictures has released a second International (UK) Trailer for The Emoji Movie but is it an animation passed its sell by date or a Toy Story esque classic waiting to unearth?

THE EMOJI MOVIE unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favourite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever. Directed by Tony Leondis. Written by Tony Leondis & Eric Siegel and Mike White. Produced by Michelle Raimo-Kouyate.

This is a hard one to call if this will deliver the emoji thumbs up or emoji poop down. Sony Pictures are assuming the movie’s targetted audience will be interested or know what those little icons are. This sums up the excuse there’s a movie in the making for everything or simply a studio creative team thinking we really want this movie.

The Emoji Movie will arrive in the UK, Irish and USA cinemas from 4th August with T.J. Miller, Anna Faris, James Corden, Patrick Stewart, Christina Aguilera, Sofía Vergara supplying the voice talents.
