It is fair to say that New Japan Pro Wrestling have made a lot of noise this year. While we can talk a lot about WWE, for good and bad, I feel we must cover New Japan. If you’re not familiar with Japanese wrestling, that’s fine. But I truly believe you have to give it a watch, you will not regret it.
Specifically the Kenny Omega VS Kazuchika Okada feud has stolen the spotlight, on a global scale for wrestling fans.
Kenny Omega VS Kazuchika Okada Feud
You must have heard of the Bullet Club? Well now leader Kenny Omega is one of professional wrestling’s hottest stars. The Canadian superstar has captivated NJPW in the past few months. At the end of the last year, Omega won the annual G1 Climax Tournament, thus earning an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match.
The IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada is New Japan’s top star. Also one of the industry’s top stars, Okada has become the proverbial golden-boy, but rightfully so. None the less Okada would then take on Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
Now before I go on, go and watch Wrestle Kingdom 11. In-fact watch the entire show, or just the Kenny Omega VS Kazuchika Okada match, it is art……….
Wrestle Kingdom 11 Match
WWE have Wrestlemania, NJPW have Wrestle Kingdom. This is New Japan’s biggest annual event, which takes place every January. This year Wrestle Kingdom 11 left the industry awe-struck, with what might be the greatest wrestling PPV ever.
The main-event of the show; Kenny Omega VS Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. In a match that went 46 minutes, both wrestlers put on an absolute work of art. Following the event, this match is considered to be one of the best matches in professional wrestling, ever.
Don’t take my word for it, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer rated the bout six-stars. The last match to achieve a six-star rating was back in 1994, over 23 years ago. Also this was not from a ‘Mark’ if you will, Meltzer has been a wrestling critic for well over 30 years, he truly knows what he is talking about.
NJPW Dominion: Omega VS Okada II
So after months of waiting for the rematch, it finally came this past Sunday. At the Dominion PPV, Omega VS Okada II was upon the professional wrestling industry, another six-stars? Maybe more?
This time they went for a staggering 60 minutes, thus the bout ended in a draw. Much like Wrestle Kingdom, both men did not let-up, as they once again put on another work of art. This match was so good, many believe it was better than their Wrestle Kingdom bout. Now that in itself, is a statement.
While it has not yet been rated, it shall be interesting to see what rating it does get. Once again Dave Meltzer himself believes it was better than their Wrestle Kingdom bout, something he shall have to take into account.
So another six-star rating? Will we saw the seven-stars broken out? None the less, it speaks volumes if the least this match deserved was five-stars. As achieving five-stars is no easy feat in professional wrestling, just to note; It has been six years since WWE last put on a five-star match.
