To celebrate the release of Ballerina on Digital Download from 14th April and Blu-ray™ and DVD from 17th April, we take a look at the best places around the world to train to become a prima ballerina.

The Royal Ballet (London, England)

One of the most prestigious ballet schools is located in the heart of London. Since its creation in 1926, The Royal Ballet has produced some of the most renowned ballerinas including Margot Fonteyn, Lynn Seymour, and Marguerite Porter. The school follows a rigorous 8-year programme, focusing on both academics and ballet. With the goal of preparing each student for a long career in ballet, the school prepares them physically and mentally, having to participate as a full-time student and a performer. The admissions process is solely audition based so that only the most determined and skilful dancers are accepted.

Vaganova Ballet Academy (Saint Petersburg, Russia)

Vaganova Ballet Academy is one of the longest running ballet schools, having opened in 1783. It has built up a reputation as one of the best schools for ballet if one wants to succeed. Under the direction of principle Nikolai Tsiskaridze, who is a decorated dancer, the academy puts heavy focus into perfecting the students ballet skills. The students can select from a range of courses, most notable are classical, character, or modern dance. With a total of 340 students, the academy is one of the most selective, but who they select are only the best.

The School of American Ballet (New York, United States)

A ballet school not too far from Broadway is a dream. The School of American Ballet is one of the best the U.S. has to offer, having over 45 alumni join top ballet companies in the United States and around the world. With over 400 students ranging from age six to eighteen, the ballet school sets them up to succeed. Since it’s located in a prime location, it provides many opportunities for students to get performances under their belt. With a structured syllabus, students maximise every opportunity presented.

John Cranko School (Stuttgart, Germany)

With a large number of performances each year and a wide range of age levels, the John Cranko School is one of the leading ballet schools in the world. With different levels based on skill and age, the school starts students young, giving them plenty of time to craft their skills. Focusing on classical ballet, the school teaches with the hope that students will apply for their own ballet company which is prestigious in itself. The John Cranko School is constantly evolving, adding new buildings and lessons to make sure their students are well accommodated.

The Paris Opera Ballet School (Paris, France)

Labelled as the “guardian of precious knowledge”, this ballet school, as seen in Ballerina, is one of the most distinguished in Europe. For their students, only the most talented instructors teach. Their director of the ballet school is Elisabeth Platel, who is an alumnus of the school and has had an extensive career as a ballerina herself. In addition, the school teaches a wide variety of ballet including classic, cotemporary, and jazz. Aside from ballet, it also offers various academic courses giving each student a vast knowledge.
