DVD Review – Sisters (2016)

Sisters is a comedy film starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler From Universal Pictures UK. Released NOW on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Sisters follows the story of two sisters who have drifted apart through the years but still keep in touch through skype and occasional phone calls. Maurna is the younger sister and is a very by the book, hard working nurse where as Kate (Fey) is more rebellious and in and out of jobs. They have to come back together to clear out their family home after their parents decide to sell the house. This comes as a shock to the girls and being in their family home takes them back to their youth which leads them to decide to hatch a plan to put people off buying the house.

I always try, as a reviewer, not to let other reviews affect my judgement on a film. I think that it is unfair and that you should always judge a film by your own standards. However with this film I heard nothing but harsh things about it so I will be very honest in saying I was not looking forward to this film.

Thankfully I went into it with an open mind and I am glad I did because although there are many, many, many things wrong with this film overall it was a decent, fun cheesy comedy and if that is what you are in the mood for then your onto a winner with this film!

Starting off with the plot, it felt like a plot to a TV movie or a direct to DVD film. I just felt like for the actors and creators behind this film the story was a little too conventional for the talent behind it. It felt really like there was not a lot put into the film. BUT I can say that even with this I do still think this film done well with its plot.

I liked that for once the film was centred around older female characters more in their late 30’s early 40’s because usually in this kind of quirky comedy its young female actors which we see in every teen romance comedy. This was a major plus with me as I think there should be more films for older female actors. I also did enjoy the characters. I thought they were very well played and had a charm to them that I think only Poehler and Fey could have. In saying that, there were times that I think the acting was a little forced and times where I think the actors seemed uncomfortable.

All that aside for what the film is I didn’t mind.

Now where the film, I felt fell really on its side, was with the length. I honestly think the film could have benefited from having 20 minutes cut from it. It did not need to be as long as it was, even though there was nothing in particular I could point to the film didn’t need it was more a case of having scenes of awkward jokes that could have been cut to give the film a tighter and more even edit.

However a point that I want to make that go against what a lot of reviewers criticised this film for was the lack of laughs. I personally thought, although not laugh out loud comedy, the film had a lot of fun moments that I really liked.

I think that with a film like this as long as it grabs your attention and keeps you interested in the story then it’s a decent film and has done it’s job, this was the case with this film.

With all the things I did not like about this film. There was equally things I did like. Overall I think this was a decent comedy that isn’t going to be a show stopper or a work of art. I think it’s a film that ticks the boxes and has enough going for it for a date night film.
