Film Review – Begin Again (2013)

When a director takes the risk of directing a film that relies primarily on music it will either be a massive success or a massive fail. Luckily, in John Carney’s case his first film of this genre, Once, thrived and even became a west end musical.

Once a film is done so well the first time round however, it’s hard to do it with another, or is it? He once again proves it isn’t so difficult in his new film Begin Again.

If you’re in charge of directing a film centered around music it is important to get actors that can sing.

In Begin Again this includes the likes of Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine who even though a singer, admitted that it was difficult having to sing and act at the same time. Award winning actress Keira Knightley despite who believes she couldn’t sing pulled it off rather well, Avengers Mark Ruffalo and Gavin and Stacey’s James Corden amongst others.

Begin Again tells the story of Dave (Levine) and Gretta (Knightley), singing partners and college sweethearts who move to New York when Dave gets offered a record deal.

As Dave gets caught up in the music industry, Gretta meets Dan (Ruffalo), an ex music producer who decides he wants to produce an album with her.

With the help of Greta’s friend Steve (Corden) and Dan’s daughter Violet (Romeo and Juliet’s Hailee Steinfield) they embark on a musical adventure as a tribute to the great city that is New York, performing in all the famous landmarks including the Empire State Building and Central Park.

Begin Again is a feel good film that once you’ve seen it, you’ll want to see again. You’ll come out of the cinema with a smile on your face and humming the very catching soundtrack. I know I did.
