The third season of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones is released on DVD and Blu-Ray just ahead of season four’s premiere in April; allowing fans of the show enough time to refresh their memories, in preparation for what looks likely to be an even more epic ten episodes than what has come before.

Season three picks up following the events of The Battle of Blackwater in season 2 – Stannis has retreated back to Dragonstone following his defeat, and Tywin has assumed his role as Hand of the King at King’s Landing. The Starks remain separated from one another. Despite the presence of numerous individual character arcs, the show does not fail in dedicating enough screen time to each, and does in fact succeed in showing a much greater depth to those whom have previously been presented as one-sided. This is evidenced in Jamie and Brienne’s journey – both literal and figurative – together, which allows us to see a thoughtful and caring side to the Lannister; as someone filled with insecurities and fear, not just the bold Kingslayer. We also witness a new side to Daenerys this season: no longer living in the shadow of her domineering brother, or mourning the loss of Khal Drogo, she becomes a ruthless force to be reckoned with in her own right – without losing the compassion she holds towards those more unfortunate than her.

All in all, this season of Game of Thrones improves even further on the previous two, by adding even more depth to the characters the audience is already acquainted with, while continuing to add new players to the fold, and without diminishing the urgency of any of its storylines. With set locations as far-ranging as Ireland, Iceland and North Africa, the production values are on-par with a big-budget blockbuster; every scene is a wonder to behold. Undoubtedly the best show on television right now.
