Feature – James Bond’s Skyfall (Guest Post)

The 23rd instalment of the Bond series is expected to draw in 007 fans across the globe and form a new band of followers.

Martin Cambell was praised for rejuvenating the British spy in Casino Royale into the grounded 007 we all read about (we will forget that Green Lantern ever existed). Daniel Craig’s portrayal of the serial womaniser with a licence to kill can be said to be one that has regained the support and enthusiasm for British film. The one liners, cheesy action and tongue in cheek humour has been stripped bare as watchers are introduced to the raw and intense Bond that Ian Fleming created. He is emotionally closed off and is arguably the most brooding of 007s, distinguishing the light on his predecessors.

However, the polished new Bond and the hard work that was put in to creating a realistic super spy was dashed by the sequel Quantum of Solace, directed by Marc Forster.  With the release of Skyfall set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the spy franchise on October 26th, we have been promised an improved plot and overall better film.

In true British fashion when it comes to the build up of a Bond film the promotional posters and official trailer plays on the role of a top secret agent by never revealing too much, but showcasing the action, explosions and chases that only Bond can take on. The posters highlight a strong and confident Daniel Craig standing with co-stars Bérénice Marlohe, Javier Bardem and Naomi Harris, a sign that Skyfall is set to become the greatest Bond film of all time.

James Bond is missing and presumed dead after a disastrous operation in Istanbul, which leads to the leak of every MI6 agent’s identity and M has becoming the subject of review over her handling of the conspiracy.  It isn’t until the service is attacked that Bond reappears igniting M’s determination to seek out Raoul Silva, a villain claiming to have a personal connection to both herself and Bond.  However, the journey from London to the South of China leads to turmoil for Bond over his loyalty to M after discovering her secrets.

As with every 007 film a new Bond girl must be discovered in which Naomi Harris takes on the role of Eve, rumoured to later become Miss Moneypenny. Although the actress has squashed the rumours that she will be playing Bond’s office sweetheart there is a still the possibility to progress the character as Eve has not been provided with a surname.
Skyfall is set to become the biggest film of the series with Daniel Craig himself saying that the third take on the Bond story is much better than Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, which received mixed reviews.
