With The Expendables 2 arriving tomorrow in UK&Irish cinemas what better time to release the first poster and official synopsis for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand. Released by IGN the film marks the Austrian actors return to a lead role since Terminator 3 but the question many people are asking can he handle the same pressure like he did many moons ago as action films have changed even in the past 10 years however The Expendables 2 should ease some of those worries. Schwarzenegger is playing an ageing Sheriff of a town on the Mexican Border which is the last hope to prevent a drug cartel leader fleeing to Mexico after escaping from a local courthouse.
The film will also be the Hollywood directorial debut for Korean film maker Jee-woon Kim who is responsible for my favourite all time Asian film I saw The Devil, don’t expect the same blood and gore in Last Stand but don’t be surpised there could be the odd borderline bloody scene.
Here’s the synopsis:
After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.
The Last Stand will arrive in UK&Ireland 25th January 2013, one week after the U.S release. The film also stars Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Peter Stormare, Genesis Rodriguez and Zach GilfordPowered by Sidelines
