Less than 4 weeks ago we brought you the rumour that Sharlto Copley the breakout star of Neil Blomkamp’s District 9 as well as The A-Team was to play the villain in Spike Lee’s Oldboy adaptation. Tonight Deadline have confirmed the South African actor will play that villain called Adrian Pryce who is a mysterious billionaire trying to destroy the life of Joe Duchett (Josh Brolin). You could say its going to be actor’s biggest role to date especially when you look at the names that have been allegedly been offered the same role, Colin Firth, Clive Owen, even Batman himself Christian Bale has been linked though that could have been for Brolin part.
The film is based on the popular a popular manga which was first adapted by Korean director Park Chan-wook who created a wonderfully dark, twisted tale starring the brilliant Choi Min-sik (I Saw The Devil), Mark Protosevich is written the new script which is believed to be more faithful to the manga than Chan Wook’s version. Oldboy tells the story of Joe a man who who finds himself kidnapped on the day of his daughter’s birthday, imprisoned for 15 years. On his release Joe goes out to find who imprisoned him and why. It’s a film that has a shocking ending but perfect for the type of story this film is based on, there is a lead female character still be picked and its this role that seems to be causing most of the problems with everyone from Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska been connected with the Elizabeth Olsen showing interest in the part however nothing has been confirmed just yet.
Staying with Copley the report goes onto to say the star is also confirmed to star in Open Grave a story of a man who wakes up lying in the middle of a grave of rotten corpses no idea how he got there but begins to have flashbacks of him murdering people becoming to believe he is a murderer. Gruesome stuff which does have some similarities to Oldboy but the only downfall of this film is it’s directed by Apollo 18 director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego ! He might not be the biggest name in Hollywood however Sharlto Copley does give a geniune heartfelt performances whatever he does star in so we are curious now to see how Oldboy will progress. Stay tuned for updates and you’ll see Copleynext in Elysium in 2013.
