Cinephiles, sciphiles, purveyors of great films PROMETHEUS will not be compromised! The desire of those fans of the Alien franchise the prayers have been answered,Prometheus will be a R Rating film! Despite the new film only ‘ Alien DNA ‘ origin it will follow the 4 films before becoming after the American board of Censors MPAA have decided the gory action Scott refused to cut is too extreme for younger viewers or “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.”
20th Century Fox Pictures have kept their side of the bargain but now they do seem a little concerned on what they’ve done.As people often say “times have changed” and so has the way we gain money as the days of films at all ratings earn big box office returns with the past ten years or so not many of the big hitters have been R rated films. With Prometheus a heavy CGI/Special FX laden film which probably cost nearly $200million to make would need a similar return to break even and the studio are sweating as they rather play it safe with a lower rated film to recover the minimum worst case scenario the costs. Let’s look at it another way maybe a way that studio’s are missing, the film’s marketing has been one of the most successful, most intriguing in a long time, the buzz for this film is unbelievable which to me suggests even if the film critically is a disaster at least financially its on course to get back the returns at the box office. No word yet has been confirmed on UK or Irish ratings , they could still be 18 Rating possibly 15 and with Uk BBFC regarded as a lot more liberal than there American counterparts the difference between 18 and 15 rating cut for UK could be minimal .
[Updated: 9th May 2012 – Empire have confirmed via Fox that the film will be released in UK as a 15 Rating with no cuts or even editing, the way Ridley Scott wanted us all to see Prometheus]
