If someone said to you Jack Black is in a documentary style film you would probably tell that person there having a giraffe. Guess what they are telling the truth an today the first trailer has arrived in the dark comedy BERNIE directed by Richard Linklater.
Black plays Bernie a true story of a small Texan town’s funeral director assistant, a true peoples person popular with the townsfolk who is pushed too far to breaking after befriending a widow played by Shirley MacLaine. His generosity is well known through out the little rural town and when the sour widow ends up dead the town is in shock and utter disbelief. The film is based on a article written in The Texas Monthly in 1998 and the mockumentary style of film making Linklater actually suits this film plus it doesn’t fall into the found footage style many similar films have opted for. What I’m seeing could actually be the first Jack Black film ever I might actually enjoy (yes stone me, I despise school of Rock,). MacLaine looks the part as the widow Mrs Nugent, even Matthew MaConaughey even looks good as the towns only citizen who actually suspects Bernie is responsible.
So has the true Jack Black finally stepped forward or are we looking at another dud? American cinephiles to find out April 27th when the film will arrive, for us here in UK&Ireland no release date has been set yet. Before you bombard me with “You Telling me you don’t like….” I do like Kung Fu Panda films but there animations so its only his voice we here, everyone has there own tastes in film and there’s nothing wrong not enjoying films of certain actors.
In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs. Marjorie quickly became fully dependant on Bernie and his generosity and Bernie struggled to meet her increasing demands. Bernie continued to handle her affairs, and the townspeople went months without seeing Marjorie. The people of Carthage were shocked when it was reported that Marjorie Nugent had been dead for some time, and Bernie Tiede was being charged with the murder.
