Everyone here at The People’s Movies is looking forward to Martin Scorsese’s Hugo when it arrives on December 2nd, a family adventure which sees the film auteur venture into new ground not just once but twice with a family film that’s going to be in 3D. The early reviews from New York Film Festival have been positive despite the film not been completely finished post production which is great news but I’m sure fans of the director will want to see him back making films in the genre that made him who he is, Thrillers and a report is circling the internet that his next film will be a thriller and adapt Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman.

According to  Variety, they are reporting the director is ‘seriously considering’ adapting the popular Norwegian novel part of a franchise which booksellers such as Waterstones are labelling ‘The Next Steig Larsson’ not just because Nesbo is Scandinavian based on stories of Harry Hole ‘a classic loose cannon in the police force, with few close friends and some unorthodox methods ‘. I havent read any of the books but what ive read about the books there dark, frigid stories and the potential of serial killer franchise which could potentially outdo Larsson’s trilogy. Variety were however quick to point out that no offer has been officially been offered this is a project he has been circling since he finished shooting Hugo. Whoever takes up the helm for this film which will be  distributed by Working title with Michael Carnahan (State Of Play, World War Z) writing the script.

The Snowman tells the story of a missing woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman is what is a cat and mouse style chase between murderer and the Police. The Snowman is actually the seventh in the series however its not Nesbo’s first book to be adapted as Head Hunters the film which set off a bidding war between studio’s away back in February at Berlin Film Festival. The film has been picked up by Momentum with the film getting released in UK&Ireland on April 6th 2012, a film which has been covered at our other site Cinehouse (click on link to watch that films trailer), so it is exciting times for Jo Nesbo and fans of his books.

With the popularity of Scandinavian thrillers so high at the moment it will be a good time to create the Snowman, and Hollywoods big guns have got into signing up the books before even the film companies of Scandinavia got a chance to bid and Martin Scorsese’s possible involvement would do wonders for this potential franchise. So if the Snowman is to be next for Scorsese it would mean such projects as The Irishman, The Gambler, Silence, Furious Love, The Five Obstructions, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Sinatra may all have to wait!
